Provenance Cabinet privacy policy

This policy explains how Provenance Cabinet, our add-in for Autodesk Fusion, handles data. In short: Cabinet sends nothing to Provenance Design Co. The only data that leaves your computer is a license check with Autodesk. Everything else stays on your computer or inside your Fusion designs.

Last updated

Provenance Cabinet is made by Provenance Design Co., LLC (“Provenance Design Co”, “we”, “us”). Questions about this policy: privacy@provenancedesignco.com.

The Autodesk license check

Provenance Cabinet is sold through the Autodesk App Store, so it asks Autodesk whether your Autodesk account is entitled to use it.

  • What is sent. Your Autodesk user ID, as Fusion reports it for the account you are signed in with, and Cabinet’s Autodesk App ID. They go over HTTPS directly to Autodesk’s entitlement service at apps.autodesk.com. Like any web request, the check also shows Autodesk your computer’s internet (IP) address and a generic software name, and it passes through a network proxy if your computer uses one. It contains no name, email address, password, design or document data.
  • When it is sent. Never when Fusion starts. When the Cabinet panel loads, or when you use a Cabinet tool, and there is no successful check for your account from the last 24 hours, Cabinet checks automatically. You can also choose Retry access check. Nothing is sent while you are signed out of Autodesk; Cabinet’s tools stay locked until you sign in.
  • After a failed or refused check. Cabinet remembers that answer in memory only. It does not contact Autodesk again during that Fusion session until you choose Retry access check, clear local data, sign in with a different Autodesk account or restart Fusion. Each network step of a check waits at most five seconds.
  • What comes back. Autodesk replies whether that account is entitled to Cabinet. Cabinet uses the reply only to unlock or lock its tools and to record when a check succeeded. Provenance Design Co never receives the request or the reply, and Cabinet never writes either one to its log.
  • Working offline. Cabinet trusts a successful check for 24 hours. If it cannot reach Autodesk, it keeps working for up to seven days after its last successful check, for the same Autodesk account. First use, and use after Clear Local Data or after switching accounts, needs one successful check. A change to your entitlement at Autodesk can take up to 24 hours to reach Cabinet, or up to seven days while Autodesk cannot be reached.

What Cabinet keeps on your computer

Cabinet keeps three kinds of files in one folder: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Provenance Design Co\Fusion AddIns\com.provenancedesignco.fusion.cabinet.

  • License record (entitlement-cache.bin). Cabinet’s App ID, your Autodesk user ID, and the date and time (UTC) of your last successful check. Windows Data Protection (DPAPI) encrypts it so that only your Windows account can read it. It is replaced at each successful check, and deleted when Autodesk refuses access, when a reply or the saved record does not match your account or Cabinet, or when the record is damaged. Signing out of Autodesk does not delete it.
  • Preferences (preferences.json). Your Dark or Light appearance, Design Units, construction method and Workshop Packet paper size. It contains no personal information and is not encrypted.
  • Diagnostic log (logs\ProvenanceCabinet.log, plus at most three older copies of about 1 MB each; the oldest is overwritten first). Plain text recording the Cabinet actions you run, whether they worked, Cabinet’s version and details of any errors. Error details can include Run, part and component names, design-check messages and folder paths, such as an export folder you chose. The log masks your Windows user-folder name in paths, and masks labelled Autodesk user IDs, App IDs and tokens, bearer credentials and email addresses. The license request and reply are never logged. The log stays on your computer; Cabinet never sends it anywhere.

Temporary copies of these files, ending in .tmp, can exist briefly while Cabinet saves them.

When you choose Export Workshop Packet, Cabinet creates a new folder inside the folder you pick, named after the Run and the export time, containing workshop-packet.html and cut-list.csv. They hold your Run name, stock names, material labels and notes, part dimensions and the export time, but no account or computer identifiers, and they load nothing from the internet when opened. They are your files: Cabinet never uploads, changes or deletes them.

Cabinet’s panel loads only files installed with the add-in. It uses no cookies, browser storage or tracking. If Cabinet fails to open, it writes a one-line notice with no personal information to Fusion’s own log.

What Cabinet stores in your Fusion designs

In a design that has been saved at least once, Cabinet stores the following inside the design: each Cabinet Run’s specification (sizes, construction choices, and any stock names, material labels and notes you type); the components, bodies, joints and names it generates; identifiers and checksums it uses to recognize its own Runs and parts; an autosaved draft of your valid edits; a Run-number counter; a temporary recovery record while an Update is in progress; a note of each Run’s most recent Workshop Packet export (Run name, export time, paper size and folder name); and a wood appearance.

Cabinet adds no name, Autodesk user ID, email address or computer name to your designs, but it saves whatever you type into names, labels and notes, so please don’t enter personal information there. Cabinet stores nothing in a design that has never been saved.

Cabinet never uploads this information to us or to anyone else. It is saved wherever Fusion saves the design, normally your Autodesk cloud project, and it travels with the design when you share, copy or export it. Fusion keeps earlier versions of the design in its version history.

Who else receives data

  • Autodesk is the only third party that receives any data from Cabinet: your Autodesk user ID and Cabinet’s App ID, for the license check. Autodesk, which runs the Autodesk App Store and Fusion, processes that data under the Autodesk Privacy Statement, which protects it at least as strongly as this policy.
  • Cabinet contains no analytics, advertising or tracking tools and no third-party software development kits. We don’t sell or share Cabinet data; Cabinet sends us none.
  • Web help, Privacy and Support links open provenancedesignco.com pages in your web browser, or a new email to support@provenancedesignco.com. Cabinet adds no data to these links. Visits to our website are covered by our website privacy policy.

Keeping and deleting data, and your choices

  • We keep no Cabinet data, because Cabinet sends us none.
  • Clear Local Data is in About & Help and on Cabinet’s license screen, and asks you to confirm. It deletes the license record, preferences and log files. Cabinet then starts a new log for the rest of the session and needs to reach Autodesk once before its tools work again. It does not touch exported Workshop Packets or your designs. If another program has one of the files open, clearing can stop partway; close that program and try again, or delete the folder yourself.
  • Remove selected Run needs an active license: select the Run, choose Remove selected Run and confirm. It deletes that Run’s geometry and the data stored with it, including its Workshop Packet note, and clears the autosaved draft if the draft belongs to that Run. It isn’t available while an interrupted Update is unresolved, and it doesn’t remove the Run-number counter, the wood appearance or earlier saved versions of the design. You can also delete a Run’s component, or the whole design, in Fusion.
  • Uninstalling Cabinet removes its program files but leaves the folder above, your exported Workshop Packets and your designs. To remove everything Cabinet kept on your computer, delete that folder after uninstalling.
  • The license check is needed for Cabinet to work. To stop Cabinet contacting Autodesk, don’t open it, or uninstall it.
  • Data Autodesk holds about your account or purchases is covered by the Autodesk Privacy Statement, which explains how to make requests to Autodesk.
